Andrew Crossroads Elder

MARRIED TO:

Vivienne

KIDS :

Jonathan, and Tim

PLACE OF BIRTH:

Port Elizabeth, South Africa

WHERE I HAVE BEEN AND WHAT I HAVE DONE:

Most of my life I’ve lived at the coast, enjoying  happy schooldays in Port Elizabeth, swimming in the surf most days for six months of the year,  and playing rugby in winter. Our family also lived in Melbourne Australia (Aussie Football) for three years  when my father was on an assignment. It was during a camp near Melbourne that I faced the Spirit’s challenges to my life,  and chose to commit to Christ. I met Vivienne while doing an engineering degree at the University of Cape Town.
My work life has applied technology and business economics in downstream oil,  first in Durban, then in Cape Town,  before coming to the Netherlands on an assignment with Shell. We have been living in the Netherlands since late 1998.  Our boys attended the British School (BSN),  and we first discovered Crossroads when checking out the school in Mariahoeve.  Both Jonathan and Tim are living in the UK, Tim involved with wind energy in Glasgow and Jon doing a Physics PhD in nuclear fusion at York.  Jon is married and we have one grandchild. My wife Vivienne works part time at the BSN senior school in Voorschoten.
In my leisure time I like outdoor activities in the fresh air – when possible  with sea and sun. Living in the Netherlands has introduced me to sailing and road biking:   I enjoy cycling the “Not Possibles” on Saturday mornings ,  and like to sail when there is an opportunity.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT CROSSROADS:

Firstly we enjoy the diversity of people worshipping together  - as Kevin Johnson used to say “a foretaste of heaven” as different national cultures and Christian traditions join to celebrate Christ as Lord.  We value the commitment to Christian grace, the cherishing of essential truths, and the mission to be authentic and relevant in the context of Zuid Holland.

MY ROLE IN CROSSROADS:

Currently I am the chair of the Elder Board, having rejoined the board in February 2017.  During 2016 I chaired the Pastor Search Team.  Right now I am not involved in a Small Group, but I do believe small groups are a key place where we learn about how to apply what God is teaching us, where we share the good and bad experiences in a loving place,  and have fun and grow in our walk with Christ.  I am also part of the ‘Connection Team’ ,  once a month you may find me at the front door welcoming people as they arrive for service.

SCRIPTURE THAT IS CENTRAL TO MY LIFE:

I found it difficult to state a specific scripture that is central to my life.  I like the books of 1 Timothy,  and Phillipians,  and also Psalms.  But for the purpose of this introduction,  I selected the verse  “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world,  but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.  Then you will know what God wants you to do,  and you will know how good and pleasing his will really is”.  (Romans 12:2)
