Messy Spirituality for Real People
If there was ever a messy and dysfunctional church, it was the church at Corinth. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians reads like a laundry list of problems. There are scandals, disagreements, confusion, and outright sin. Members quarrel, pridefully taking sides against each other. They hurt and alienate one another. And yet, despite all their failures, Paul does not forget what Christ can do in and through them. He points them to their God-enabled potential and tells them: "You are holy. Now become who you are."

Paul's advice on Spiritual Gifts
God loves diversity, and that love is reflected in the gifts he has given to his people. God intends that all the gifts of the Holy Spirit work in harmony. Though these are gifts, they are not ours to keep. They are to be given away as the Holy Spirit leads, for the good of all. With this motivation of service in mind, Paul encourages us to “eagerly desire spiritual gifts.”
“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts.”
