A New World
At the tomb an angel speaks to the three women who have come to care for Jesus’ body- He says to them ‘don’t be afraid.’ Ever wonder why Angels are always saying that? In Psalm 130 we hear a similar thing- when the psalmist says that because there is forgiveness in God He is feared. What? The fact is that the character of God has always been the opposite of the character of the world we know. And nothing shouts that more clearly than the resurrection. The empty tomb proclaims for all that the world we know is overcome and a world of love, life, forgiveness is possible for us. As much as we crave that on one level we fear it too- because it calls us to let go of our idols and pursuits of false life.
A Resurrection World
Early one Sunday morning- the universe changed. The tomb was empty. Jesus was alive. When Mary met Him she wanted to cling on to Him but He told her that the graveyard was not the place for her. He told her to go out, to leave the place of loss and grief. He told her to go and live. It was not a new theme for Jesus - He is always pushing His followers towards life. A life He has made possible through His death and resurrection. He lives and so can we.
