This week marked the beginning of Lent. Christians have traditionally spent the 40 days before Easter seeking God, sometimes making space to be still before Him by giving up some of the distractions of everyday life. Jesus withdrew from the crowds at his baptism to the wilderness for 40 days, where he was faced with silence, solitude, hunger and temptation. Today we read Matthew 4:1-11 to continue our series asking who is Jesus, why did he need to go through this time of testing, and how might we follow in his footsteps during Lent this year?

On Sunday the 17th of February, as part of our series on our ‘True Identity,’ we looked at Psalm 139, and looked at both the personal implications of the LORD’s intimate searching of our hearts and His presence in our lives, and at the broader implications, for each person, for all of humanity, of our role as persons created in God’s image...and for the sense in which the request to “lead me in the way everlasting” echos with Jesus, the Way.

Philippians 3:20 Our citizenship is in heaven.
In an international community like Crossroads, we often introduce ourselves by sharing where we come from. The Bible teaches us that we can also know where we are going, and this can be an equally important part of our identity. As we come to the end of our series on exploring our identity, we will look forward together this Sunday to our hope of eternal life, and how this can shape who we are.

True identity. Closer to who I really am.

At the start of this series we look at Jacob wrestling God at the river Jabbok. All his life Jacob has struggled with people to get things the way he thinks God promised to him. It takes him until he is very old that he finally understands he was struggling God all along. And the closer he gets to God, the more he can let go control of his blessings.
