29/01/2012The Elder Brother
Series: The Prodigal God. Today we often make Jesus into a watered down religious icon- but the truth is that Jesus was not what anyone expected. His humility and His teachings about God and Himself, constantly offended and shocked the religious people of His day. On the other hand, those who felt disenfranchised by the powers of the day, flocked to Jesus.

22/01/2012He came to his senses…
Series: The Prodigal God. In the story of the prodigal- the younger son comes to a moment where he realizes how lost he has become. Rather than giving up or running further he decides to return to his father’s home. In doing this, he has decided to go back to the only place he has ever tasted real life. The Bible calls this repentance- to turn from death and back to life. Because the promise of Jesus is that the Father is always ready to receive His daughters and sons.

08/01/2012Discipleship
Series: The Prodigal God. Too often we imagine that believing in Jesus is about a way of looking at God or accepting a set of ideas about life. But belief as the Bible reveals and as Jesus taught is never solely an intellectual agreement, but is about following. To believe in Jesus is to become a student of His and begin to allow His transforming love to reshape our daily lives.

18/12/2011Hope in a World of Despair
Hope is a precious and rare thing in this world. Too often we feel locked up by our past. But the baby whose birth we celebrate came to change everything- to make everything new. In this world of despair there is hope for new life, relationships, purpose, community, reconciliation....

04/12/2011Peace in a World at War
What does it mean when the Bible calls Jesus the ‘Prince of Peace’? If he came to bring peace then why is there so much conflict in our world? The birth of that baby 2,000 years ago calls us to contend again with the claim that God alone is the place of true peace for our hearts and world. Let’s ask these questions together this Sunday.

27/11/2011From stones to Stars
Every year we spend time, money, and emotion in preparing for Christmas. But why? Can the birth of this baby really mean anything 2000 years later? Is the promise of light, peace, hope, and life really something we can trust in, when the reality of our world seems to contradict that promise? The gospel of Jesus Christ says yes- that Christmas really does matter. Join us for the next four weeks as we explore the meaning of the birth of Jesus.

20/11/2011Why we try to be a forgiving community?
Forgiveness is the DNA of the church. We have received grace and are called to extend grace to one another. As our Crossroads manual says: “We want to continually demonstrate the gentleness, patience and loving acceptance modeled by Jesus. So that we all, as imperfect people, can find the room we need to grow. “ But how do we do that? How can we accept and understand one another when we are disappointed? How do we forgive, when we have been hurt?

13/11/2011Why we ask questions
Doubt is often treated like a shameful secret in the Church- yet the reality is that most of us have some doubts and many questions. Far from being a shameful and harmful secret- we believe that doubt, handled healthily, is an integral part of a growing faith.

16/10/2011God is King
We pray not for self-improvement but to develop the life of God within us. We are invited to the adventure of prayer by a loving and intimate Father. Jesus reminds us however that this Father is also King. And part of what we are asking when we pray like Jesus is that the kingship and character of God would be realized in us and through us.

09/10/2011God is Listening
Praying is no easy matter. At times, we question whether our prayers do more than merely hit the ceiling. We wonder: Does God care at all? Does prayer make any difference? Is God even listening? The Bible clearly teaches that God cares for us and hears our prayers. Why pray? Because…God is listening.

02/10/2011The Lord's Prayer
The Lord’s Prayer is a bold and dangerous prayer. In it we ask for God’s will, and not our own, to be done in us and through us. What allows us that bold approach to God? The fact that He is a Father listening to His children.

The longing in the heart of a woman to share life together as a great adventure – that comes straight from the heart of God, who also longs for this. God does not want to be an option in our lives. Neither does any woman. God is essential. He wants us to need Him – desperately. Eve is essential. She fills a place in the world nothing and no one else can fill.

13/03/2011Welcoming the Humble King
At the beginning of the last week of Jesus’ life he entered the city of Jerusalem to a heroes’ welcome. But he didn’t act the way the cheering crowd expected. 13/02/2011Grace: Working It Out
For many of us, the real challenge of living out a grace-filled life in Christ comes every Monday morning as we begin our weekly routines either in the workplace or at school. Any encouragement or perspective we receive from our time together on a Sunday morning often seems to quickly disappear as we enter the hostile environment of the so-called "real world". It doesn't have to be like this. Join us this Sunday as we discuss how Paul encouraged the Colossian church to work out their faith in their everyday lives, and see how we might apply his advice today.

The truth of the incarnation is that once God has shown up in a stable, there is no place ‘safe’ from His presence. 24/10/2010Living Beyond Ourselves
It is easy to get caught up in pursuing our own priorities and goals – both as individuals and as a church. Nehemiah is a shining example of how God intends us to live our lives -- with an openness to God which allows His Spirit to interrupt “our work” so that we are free to minister to the needs of the poor and oppressed. Learning to “live beyond ourselves” for the sake of those less fortunate than ourselves, allows us to experience the joy and delight of playing a significant role in God’s “rescue plan” for this world.

29/08/2010Fully Known and Loved
Psalm 139 says God is thinking about every one of us all the time and that he is intimately acquainted with all of our ways. He knows everything about us yet loves us fully and unconditionally. To be known and loved for who we really are -including the good, bad, and ugly bits - is liberating and life giving. To God, no person, and no circumstance is wasted. All of life matters and has a meaning and purpose. No wonder the psalmist exclaimed "such knowledge is too wonderful for me".

Come and join us this Sunday as we start our new series: “The Psalm Experience”, where we will open up that old song book and discover that these songs are not only relevant today, but for all eternity. Come and join us as we sing together a really old, new song.

13/06/2010Don't Buy Stuff You Can't Afford
In learning to live and work in God’s economy, we should recognize that debt is a major hindrance to enjoying Gods provision. Changes in life’s circumstances can have serious financial consequences and leave us in a situation in which we cannot meet our obligations, causing internal stress, and straining inter-personal relationships. The Bible portrays an apparently hopeless situation in which a woman cannot repay her debts, until God steps in and shows her what it means to be introduced to His economy.

06/06/2010God's Pie
In 1717, as ‘Master of the Mint’, Isaac Newton fixed the price of one ounce of gold at £3 17s 10 ½ d. This Gold Standard dominated economics for over 200 years. The value of paper money was fixed to this standard. Britain abandoned the standard after the depression in 1931 and its last remains were interred in 1971 by President Nixon. Our day-to-day use of money is decoupled from anything which has intrinsic worth. Money is worth only promises, and these are often very empty! Christians should get back on the spiritual “Gold Standard”! There is something of intrinsic and eternal worth which measures everything we think, feel and do about money. It is a rich, timeless biblical perspective on money that measures and tests our spending and saving, giving and borrowing, our financial planning and our lifestyle. This standard is defined by God’s ownership of everything we have. God’s goals are our ultimate standard.

30/05/2010God Doesn't Waste our Pain
One of the great things about God is that He never wastes a hurt. And He doesn't want to waste ours. As we yield ourselves to God, He can work through us to bring good news to others, through our example and our words. We can become "wounded healers", like Jesus. When we learn to "recycle" our weaknesses and our pain we can make a difference for good in the lives of other people.

23/05/2010Keep the Flame Burning
Our series so far has been looking at Life's Healing Choices.
And maybe you have made a choice- to come clean, to forgive, to make a change…
How do you keep it up?
What's to stop you slipping straight back into your old ways?
How can you keep on going, and keep on growing? You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialize correctly.

16/05/2010Restoring Relationships
Anger, hurt feelings, and even betrayel can emotionally and spiritually tie us in knots. For those of us who have been genuinely wounded, the prospect of forgiving those who have caused us pain often seems impossible. Yet, through Christ all things are possible, including full forgiveness. No matter what you've done or what's been done to you, Jesus offers us a freedom and joy that comes from accepting and extending God's outrageous grace.

02/05/2010Coming Clean
We are continuing to explore choices that help us move toward healing and spiritual maturity. This week, in the season of “Spring cleaning” we focus in on the “Housecleaning Choice”: the decision to openly examine ourselves and confess our faults to ourselves, to God and to someone we trust. This is a difficult choice to make, but one that makes a significant impact in our health and growth.

18/04/2010The Struggle and the Hope
After coming to Christ, many of us are surprised to find that our new lives are still full of our old issues. We struggle with the fact that we can't quite get them under control. We struggle with our apparent lack of faith. We even struggle with the fact that we're struggling. Join us this Sunday as we discuss the comfort that can be ours through the Spirit of Christ... as we discuss the "Hope choice".

11/04/2010Admitting Need
Part of our human nature is to refuse change until our pain exceeds our fear – fear of change, that is. We simply deny the pain until it gets so bad that we are crushed and finally realize we need some help. Why don’t we save ourselves a bit of misery and admit now what we’re inevitably going to have to admit later? We are not God, and we desperately need God because our lives are unmanageable without Him.

04/04/2010The Way

28/03/2010I Am the Resurrection and the Life
The center point of Christianity is Christ. But who is this Jesus anyway? Jesus himself said that knowing him was eternal life. So it is crucial that we get to know him. Exploring the claims that Jesus made about himself can help us answer this vital question.

21/03/2010The Bread of Life
When Jesus fed five thousand people in the wilderness, he was doing something more than providing a supernatural catering service. He was telling a story - in fact, two stories - about the profound need of the people for a bread from heaven that would give them life.

14/03/2010Good News About Injustice
Not only does injustice confront us with the horror of human suffering and the terror of human and demonic evil, it also raises many troubling questions. Where is God? Why doesn’t God act? Where are good people? Why don’t we act? What can be done about these horrible situations? The good news about injustice is that God is against it and that He is in the business of using ordinary people to accomplish justice and mercy.

28/02/2010The ‘Sine Qua Non’ of Our Faith
For over two thousand years, people have been talking about Jesus of Nazareth. The world's 3 major monotheistic religions (Christianity, Judaism, & Islam) have definite views on who he was and who he wasn't. The Jewish population of his day also had many theories ranging from him being a demon possessed Samaritan (ouch!) to the Messiah of the Jewish nation who would rescue them from the oppression of the Roman empire. Join us this Sunday as we start a new series addressing the most central question of our Christian faith: "Who was Jesus?"

21/02/2010Fixing Our Gaze
One of the things that is important to us at Crossroads is being “extro-spective”: looking outside of ourselves. God calls us to not only look out for our own interests, but also to care about, meet the needs of, and reach out to those around us. The early church lived that out with a passion. But what does missional living look like in the 21st century?

31/01/2010Contentment in any Circumstance
As winter sets in, with concerns about epidemics and economics, we need more than a flu shot. We need a joy injection. Joy is an essential part of the Christian life, and it is available to us no matter what the circumstances of our lives may be. The Apostle Paul wrote a lot about joy in his letter to the Philippians. Exploring that letter can help us experience a dose of joy even in the midst of the winter blues.

24/01/2010The Peace of God
The world is a troubled place. From Haiti to Afghanistan everything can seem in turmoil. The small worlds of our private lives can seem just as chaotic. Where can we go to find peace? Paul assures the Philippians in the midst of their troubles that 'the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus'. How does that work? How can a community like Crossroads become a place of peace?

What difference does it make that Jesus was born? The angels announced: “Good news, of great joy, for all people: born this day is a Saviour, Christ the Lord…Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, among people with whom he is well pleased” (other translation: “people of goodwill.”) This is a global pronouncement, dealing with global issues. Why is Jesus’ coming good news of great joy for all people? What is his legacy? And how do we as “Christ-ians”carry on Jesus’ work of bringing peace on earth and expressing God’s good will to the whole world?

In Luke 6 the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus seems to challenge everyone's understanding of the Kingdom of God. The poor will have the Kingdom of God, not the rich, those who weep will laugh, those who are laughing will weep, those who are hungry will be full and those who are full will be hungry. Who is this Kingdom for? The Messy? Jesus elevates those we lower and lowers those we elevate. What is he doing here and why should we care that the Kingdom of God is for the poor? This Sunday we will look at why Jesus Blesses the Messy and why that applies to us.
